Lagos Assembly Speaker Obasa Impeached, Clerk Suspended Amid Security Clampdown
The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached its speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and suspended Clerk Olalekan Onafeko amid escalating tensions at the assembly complex. The lawmakers moved swiftly to appoint Mojisola Meranda, the representative of Apapa, as the new Speaker.
Onafeko reportedly brought to the assembly by Obasa, was also removed from his position. The duo had previously attracted criticism for their role in restricting journalists from covering legislative activities.
Heightened Security at the Assembly Complex
The impeachment proceedings were carried out under tight security, with personnel from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Lagos Task Force, and the Police securing the assembly premises and surrounding areas. Access to the complex was restricted, as motorists and visitors were turned back.
The Security forces acted swiftly to contain disruptions after reports emerged of an attempted invasion by suspected thugs believed to be loyal to Obasa. Several miscreants were intercepted and detained in a waiting Black Maria. Among the items recovered from the arrested individuals were charms and amulets.

Leadership Transition
In what has been described as a dramatic turn of events, Obasa was removed in a “gestapo-style” operation by his colleagues. Mojisola Meranda, previously serving as Deputy Speaker, was elevated to the role of substantive Speaker.
The developments mark a significant power shift within the Lagos Assembly, signaling potential changes in the state’s political dynamics. Observers will closely watch the unfolding situation as the assembly continues its work under new leadership.
