Lasbat Meranda Becomes First Female Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly
In a historic development, the Lagos State House of Assembly has elected Lasbat Meranda as its first female Speaker following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. This marks a pivotal moment in the state’s political history, as Meranda becomes the eighth person and the first woman to hold the position since the assembly’s establishment in 1979.
Lasbat Meranda’s appointment follows allegations of corruption against Obasa, which were first reported by Peoples Gazette. The swift transition of power comes amid heightened scrutiny of the assembly’s leadership.
Meranda, a seasoned legislator, represents Apapa I and has been a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015. She is currently serving her third term and has been a prominent figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), known for her loyalty to the party.

Merenda’s Public Service
Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos, Meranda’s career spans both public service and the private sector. She began her education at Randle Primary School and later attended Anglican Girls Grammar School. She pursued higher education at Lagos State University and the University of Lagos, earning both undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Before joining the Lagos parliament, Meranda served as a political aide in Apapa Local Government from 2008 to 2014. She also has experience in the private sector, having managed an oil and gas business prior to her foray into politics.
Her Leadership Amidst Challenges
Meranda’s legislative track record remains somewhat unclear, but parliamentary insiders describe her as a steadfast supporter of APC policies and initiatives. Her rise to the position of Speaker signals a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly as she brings a fresh perspective to a role previously held exclusively by men.
This groundbreaking appointment is expected to shape the political landscape of Lagos, with many watching closely to see how Meranda navigates her new responsibilities and the challenges ahead.
